Everyone is aware that food will go bad at some point. However, many do not know that many common household items do not last forever, or lose their effect at some point. In addition to the refrigerator, it is therefore advisable to look into kitchen and bathroom cabinets from time to time and to check the expiry date of the products.
Above all, things that promise a certain effect should be exchanged at regular intervals or used up quickly. This affects both cosmetic and electronic products, some of which may even pose a real threat after the expiration date.
For this reason, we have created a list that shows you which products in your household do not last forever.
To save money, many people buy products in large quantities. Toothpaste is often included. It is a commonly used household product that is often forgotten to buy.
Even though it is beneficial to have enough of it in stock, keep in mind that toothpaste doesn’t last forever. Most manufacturers have products with an expiry date of two years. However, this always depends on the manufacturer and the individual product.
There are also many toothpastes with natural products that last less than a year. Before you buy, you should consider whether you can really consume so much toothpaste within this time.
Vinegar is a kind of universal household remedy for many people, which they use for food as well as for many other things, such as cleaning pipes. Unfortunately, this product doesn’t last forever either.
The advantage of vinegar is that you can tell when it gets old. In this case, a thick coating forms at the bottom of the bottle. Then at the latest it would be time to dispose of or replace the bottle.
Also keep in mind that this doesn’t just affect the vinegar you consume. Even if you only want to use it for cleaning, it will not work as well after the expiry date.
Unfortunately, many bottles of sunscreen do not have an expiry date. However, you should keep in mind that the effects of sun protection do not last forever. In general, protection slowly decreases after three years.
Experts therefore advise buying new sunscreen regularly. This is the only way you can be sure that it will achieve the effect after application that the manufacturer promises.
Since sunscreen is not so expensive, it is advisable to use a bottle for no longer than a year. If you don’t want to waste the product, you can simply apply it more often during the day. In general, this is advised by many experts to guarantee secure protection.
Unfortunately, shampoo doesn’t last forever. As with many products, it always depends on the manufacturer and the individual product as well as the ingredients. Most shampoos last up to four unopened for up to two years.
After the expiry date, the effect of individual components can no longer be guaranteed. It is also possible that expired products, such as shampoo, can cause allergies if they continue to be used.
Shampoo bottles are usually kept in the shower and often become wet, making the expiration date no longer visible. For this reason, it is recommended to use up an opened bottle quickly and to use closed bottles within two years after purchase.
Creams are often cheaper if they are bought in larger quantities or with a larger content. However, you should also keep in mind with these products that they do not last forever. Newly purchased products are simply better in terms of ingredients.
Also keep in mind that creams that you apply with your finger will accumulate bacteria, which will also reduce their effectiveness over time. Regardless of the expiry date, it is particularly advisable to use face creams for no longer than six months.
Sometimes it is better to invest a little more money and buy these products in small sizes and more often.
Many are aware that they have to change their sponges regularly. Bacteria accumulate quickly over time, especially if they get wet or damp. However, what most people are not aware of is that even unused sponges have an expiration date.
Bacteria will also accumulate on these or in the gaps in time, which will then spread to the sponges. Experts suspect well over 300 different types of bacteria that can lurk on such a sponge.
Oh, with this product, it is therefore advisable to buy in smaller quantities and therefore not to risk that the bacteria are transferred to other things, such as the dishes.
7. Dishwashing liquid
Unlike detergents for garments, dishwashing detergents cannot use the same aggressive ingredients for cleaning because in the worst case they can get into the body. Manufacturers rely primarily on enzymes for dishwashing detergents.
Since this is a biological substance, it can also become bad over time. It is therefore best not to buy particularly large bottles of washing-up liquid, but rather small ones, which you often have to replace.
Still, you can save money by buying refill packs. It is only important that you rinse the container thoroughly after use and let it dry before adding new detergent.
8. Cooking oil
Usually, cooking oil is used up relatively quickly in most households. However, if you only use it occasionally, you should remember to renew it regularly.
Even if it is often a plant-based oil, it can go rancid over time. This causes toxins to develop that can even be carcinogenic and are responsible for other diseases.
It is therefore important to always pay attention to the expiry date for cooking oil. Especially after opening, oil should be used up within six months. It is also important to store oil in a cool, dark place to slow down the aging process.
9. Power strips
Almost every household has power outlets; sometimes even more than one. They offer you the advantage that you can connect several electrical devices to one socket. Since such electrical devices cannot be easily maintained, they have to be replaced over time.
After around seven years, experts recommend replacing a power strip. This often leads to disturbances that you do not notice at the beginning. In the worst case, there may be a short circuit or a fire.
It is best to replace power strips every three years to ensure that they still work. Also, think about proper disposal.
Similar to sponges, loofahs are a real breeding ground for bacteria. Even if they have many good properties for the body, they must be replaced regularly so that they do not become harmful to health.
The reason for this is that loofahs regularly come into contact with moisture and over time bacteria thrive on the surface that can no longer be easily removed with water or even detergent.
Every three months, you should make sure to replace the body sponge. You can often save money by buying loofahs in bulk. Also keep in mind that even washing in the washing machine will not remove the bacteria.
Flour is a product that has an expiration date just like fruit and other foods, but many don’t think about it. Especially if you buy it in a larger package, it often stays in the closet for months and is simply used again afterward.
Surprisingly, however, flour should only be used a maximum of eight months after the date of printing, even in the unopened state. If you only use flour from time to time, a smaller package is better.
You can also recognize old mail by its smell. If there is even a slight aroma when you hold your nose in the pack, you should stop using it.
The glasses and therefore the construction itself have no expiry date. What is special about sunglasses, however, is that they offer the eyes protection from the harmful UV rays of the sun.
However, you should keep in mind that this protective function does not last forever. The reason for this is to wear. It is therefore necessary that you regularly invest in new sunglasses or, in principle, new glasses.
Sunglasses and UV protection last for several years. However, it is advisable not to use the same sunglasses or glasses for longer than two years at a time. Even a small decrease in protection can be harmful to you.
If you don’t use razors, they will last longer, of course. An exception applies if they come into contact with water, which of course causes rust on the blades.
However, when it comes to the use of shaves, the blades have an expiry date and therefore cannot be used forever. The reason for this is that these become blurred at some point, which can lead to injuries in the worst case.
So-called disposable razors in particular should actually only be used once and then disposed of. For all others, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and otherwise replace a blade at least once a month if possible.
